Five simple ways to release harmful beliefs
Your brain is like a computer. When it's infected with many types of malware (harmful beliefs), it can go haywire, leading to mental health problems. However, you can help it function better by installing proper programs (beneficial beliefs).
Here are five simple methods you can use to release harmful beliefs and develop healthy ones:
1) Writing Exercise
Select a topic, then write down your beliefs surrounding it on a piece of paper. Ask yourself various questions related to that topic while monitoring your thoughts and emotions to uncover what beliefs you hold.
For example, if you’re looking for a fulfilling relationship, you can ask yourself how you feel about love, being in a relationship, and finding the right partner.
After writing down all your beliefs, erase the negative and limiting ones with an eraser. Alternatively, you can write down the beliefs you want to discard on a piece of paper, and dispose of it by tossing it into a fire.
2) Affirmations
Create an affirmation to overwrite a negative belief, and repeat it daily. To save time, you can weave this practice into your routine, for example, while going for a walk or running errands.
I have got a tip on how to construct an effective affirmation:
Use positive phrasing and avoid negations (e.g., “not”). This is because the Universe tends to ignore the word “not.”
For example, if you want to end a toxic ancestral cycle, the affirmation “I do NOT continue the toxic cycle of my ancestors” might not work well, because the Universe could still interpret it as “I continue the toxic cycle of my ancestors.”
Instead, try: “I break the toxic cycle of my ancestors and start a healthy one with love and joy.”
3) Ho'oponopono
This is a traditional Hawaiian practice of forgiveness and healing. Ask yourself what might have caused the belief. If a painful memory surfaces, say: “I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.” If another memory arises, repeat this prayer until no more memories come up.
4) Visualization Method from the Seth Material
Imagine your harmful beliefs as an old, run-down house. Then, visualize it burning to the ground, with the debris carted away and destroyed. Now, the land is free, ready for the construction of a new, beautiful house that represents your new set of beneficial beliefs.
I’ve tried this exercise by visualizing the destruction of different kinds of old structures instead of a house, and it still works. If you prefer using other types of structures to represent your old beliefs, you can visualize their destruction and the effect is just as powerful.
5) Shift Your Focus
Your beliefs direct your thoughts
→ Your thoughts shape your emotions
→ Your emotions generate energy
→ Your energy influences your manifestations and hence your physical experiences
→ Your experiences reinforce your beliefs
(summarized by the diagram below).
This is an endless feedback loop.
However, you can transform this loop by mastering your focus, thus changing your thoughts, and gradually replacing your beliefs. Below are four techniques to control your focus:
1) Reframe Challenges
Instead of dwelling on pain and struggles, shift your focus to the growth and strength they bring. Tell yourself: “This experience is shaping me into a stronger, wiser version of myself.”
2) Find Joy in the Everyday
Focus on the people, moments, and little things that make you happy: the smile of a loved one, a song you love, the beauty of wildflowers on your way to work. The more you appreciate, the more joy you invite in.
3) Let Go of Triggers
When something upsets you, ask yourself: What belief is causing this reaction? For example, if a cashier is rude to you, you might feel angry because you believe they’re intentionally being disrespectful. But you can shift your mood by considering: Maybe they’re just having a bad day.
4) Count Your Blessings
Instead of focusing on what’s missing, focus on what’s already amazing in your life. When you shift your attention to your blessings rather than your lacks, by the Law of Attraction you invite even more blessings into your life.
To conclude, with some practice, you can completely remove any harmful beliefs! If you have any questions, you’re welcome to ask me in the comments section.
